I know, I chuckle just reading my own headline, it may be hard to believe that the Houston Astros can teach anyone anything, but that is part of the point of this article.
And, no we will not win the award for the worst record in baseball history, that honor stays with Cleveland Spiders in 1899, though we are heading for a listing in the top, or should I say bottom, ten.
This is the 50th Anniversary of the Houston Astros team and in all of these 50 years the team has only made it to the World Series once, losing to the Chicago White Sox in four straight.
And, only one other team has not won a World Series, besides the Houston Astros, for over 50 years, and that would be our neighbors the Texas Rangers with 51 years. Yes, the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs have had droughts longer than ours, but they have at least won a World Series at some point in their history.
Enough of the baseball history lesson, on to the lessons to be learned.
Houston, the city, has not quit on their Houston Astros! No matter what, we are keeping our team. And, for the first 50 years we have stayed with the same programs, so to speak, the National League. The Houston Astros will be in the American League next year, 2013, so you Braves are not going to have us to whoop on, at least not till we meet in the World Series.
That is dedication, persistance. Yes, the owners have changed, the players have come and gone, heck, just a couple days ago we dumped some of the managers.
Does this sound like some of your downline, some of those folks you thought had such great promise, that where going to help you build your business to the heights you barely imagined?
It sure does mine.
Reminds me of the Top Gun movie where you hear from Hollywood, when Viper is chasing him, “Where’d he go?”, and his co-pilot says “Where’d who go?”
Well, my friends, that is all part of business. Finding others with your drive, dedication, motivation and burning desires is not easy. It takes work, it takes learning every thing you can about your business, and then how to market it, and then how to work with people, to teach, guide and be there for them when they need you.
Now, I am not saying that you will be like the Houston Astros, the Rangers, or even the Indians or Cubs, but you will have to make the decision that Houston made, to stick with it no matter what!
The next point is that they did not add soccer to their repertoire, nor football, nor hockey. We Houstonians would not have known what to think, the same holds true for your team, your downline, if they do not know, beyond all doubt, what you are doing, why, where and for what reason, they will wonder if they should follow you, because they are unsure of your direction.
The Houston Astros have played Major League Baseball in the National League for 50 years. Everyone that has grown up in Houston knows that, knows where they will be playing, and can easily find out the dates they are playing at home.
Does your team, your downline know that? Do they have the faith that you will be there?
This is essential to your success, this is what we like to call ‘know, like and trust’, or KLT for short. They know you and what you are doing, they like you and what you are doing and they trust you and what you are doing.
The final thing I will talk about in this article is critical and it’s a four letter word – TEAM!
This business, like baseball, is all about teamwork. And, you as the leader, the manager, the coach, needs to learn how to guide the TEAM, to work with the TEAM.
Remember, there are 9 different positions on a baseball team, you will have even more in your business. Everyone is different, everyone has their own personality that they will bring into the business, to the team.
So whether it is baseball, or you directing Top Gun, you need to know how to work with each player, actor/actress, person on the TEAM!
The investment of your time and energy will pay off a hundredfold by your focusing on building each position, each leg, each person on your TEAM!
You will succeed when you follow some basic principles in your business:
1. You stick with it!
2. You build KLT!
3. You work with your TEAM!
It is all about what you do every day, be remarkable!
