Welcome back to setting up WordPress on your Website.
Yesterday your homework assignment was to check out all the Theme Options available to you for WordPress on your Website. If you missed yesterday’s article, find it here… I Now Have WordPress On My Website!
In a separate tab on your internet browser open up your website so that you will be able to follow along, basically bounce between your browser tabs, or print this page out if that would be easier for you.
On the bottom right of your website are the META tags, click on Login, input your user name and password and click Login, your WordPress Dashboard will appear on your monitor.
Now, if you have decided that you would like to change your WordPress Theme either mouse over the Appearance tab then click on Themes, or click on ‘change your theme completely’.
We are going to change our WordPress Theme today so that you will see how easy it is, and so that you will know how in the future to change it if you find that the WordPress Theme you have chosen does not fit your needs.
On your WordPress Themes page, in the top menu bar, you will see ‘Manage Themes’ and ‘Install Themes’, click on ‘Install Themes’.
I am assuming that you experimented a little with Themes after yesterday’s article and have decided on a WordPress Theme that you would like to use. Today we will install the WordPress Theme called BlogoLife, it is one of my favorites, it is versatile as you will see.
Note: Many of the WordPress Themes you will see, also, have a lot of versatility, and will be customizable to your needs, but if you do run in to a stumbling block with the Theme you have chosen, as you will see the changing of a Theme, though time consuming, is relatively easy to accomplish.
In the Search box I enter BlogoLife and click on Search, this is the screen that will appear…
Click on Preview to see a full screen version with a left side panel that tells you a little more about the BlogoLife Theme. Note that this Theme uses HTML5 and CSS3, for the beginner (newbie) this may not mean anything to you, but this is a good thing. This shows you that the creator of this Theme is keeping the Theme up to date with the latest technology. Take a moment and look down the Preview page, you will see that there is a lot built into this Theme, and though you may not understand it all now, feel confident that you will be able to do a lot with this Theme.
We are now going to install this WordPress Theme, and we do this by simply clicking on the Install button. The following page will appear…
As WordPress wants to make sure you really want to install what you have selected, WordPress does not actually Install the Theme until you click on the ‘Activate’. Go ahead and click on it now, in less than a minute it will be installed and will be your default Theme.
Let’s make a couple changes and start customizing our WordPress website…
As you will see from the upper right arrow this is now your Current Theme, from the top center arrow you may Preview your new Theme installed on your Website, and to start with some basic customizing the arrow on the left side of the page is what we will click on. You will see the following Welcome page…
Take a moment to read this Welcome page to learn more about some of the features of your new BlogoLife Theme. Then on the left side click on General Settings.
First let’s look at the Color Scheme, click on the arrow to change to the color that best suits you and your website, after you change the color, check it and make sure you like it, it’s easy to change so select one to get yourself started.
Second, Main Navigation, the default is Display, as we want our site visitors to easily move around our site we will leave this at the default setting.
Third, RSS (Rich Site Summary), allows your website visitors to be notified when you add new blogs to your site, each time one of your site visitors click on the RSS button to follow your blogs you will receive an email notification to the email address you entered when you signed up for your WordPress account.
Your ‘feed’ is the page that you will be posting your blog updates on, as we are just getting started your ‘feed’ will be…
Go ahead and enter that in the RSS box for now, we can always adjust this later.
Fourth, the Favicon URL, this is the 16×16 pixel image of your logo (or any picture you select) that will appear on the Browser Tab in place of the IE, Google or whatever standard logo appears on your Browser Tab for the websites you are visiting. We will learn and add your Favicon in a future post, so for now leave this at it’s default setting.
In our next article we will talk more about the BlogoLife Theme and the next 2 topics in the General Settings, and then learn how to Post your first blog / article, and more.
