Getting Started: Email Address
Selecting your email address seems like an easy task, but nothing could be further from the truth. Your email address is a part of your online identity, this identity that you are creating MUST be consistent EVERYWHERE.
So, unless your ‘name’, your ‘identity’, is very unique this may not be as easy as it sounds, so this may take some thought and effort on your part. It will be worth it!
You will want to make it as easy as possible for people to find you, you want to make it intuitive, that when you meet someone new and they are getting to know you that all they have to do is start typing your “name” and Search Engines, Social Media sites, their email program, etc. will auto-complete YOUR “name”.
If you have decided, and it is highly recommended as you’ll see in a future chapter, to get your own Domain Name you may want to start there. With the growth of the internet, which, as I’m sure you know, will continue to grow for many years to come, finding the best name for you and your business may be challenging.
As it is you who are building a business online, would it not be beneficial to own your own name? Absolutely! You sure don’t someone else controlling your name, who knows what they might start putting online.
Start with YOURNAME.com, as at this time it is still the most popular suffix for websites, though the importance of the <dot>com extension will not be as important as the content that you will be putting on your website. The search engines, who will direct traffic to your website through user searches, will point them to your site because of that great, original content that you will be putting there.

With any luck you have just gotten your name for your Domain and you are now in control of all that is ‘branded’ along with it.
If your ‘name’ is not available as a <dot>com you will have been shown some suggestions, the other more popular extensions are <dot>net, <dot>org and more. Wikipedia offers a list of ‘Top Level Domain’ names (TLD’s), so you may want to be creative, but a warning, if you decide to select YOURNAME.me, the <dot>me is used primarily for the country Montenegro and, at this time, search engines will not rank you in the US as if you had a common US TLD.
I have hit some points here that will be discussed more in depth in the chapter on ‘Website or Blog’, but the important points I am trying to get across to you is that “Branding” is a key to your business development and that you want your “Name” to be branded by YOU, not someone else.
Next, you will want to get that same “Name” as an email address on Google, YOURNAME@gmail.com, and it is not a bad idea to get that same name at all the big email services like Yahoo and Outlook.
Then on to Social Media sites like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc., that will be the best way to insure that your “Name” and your “Brand” are yours.
Finally, if you can not get your “Name” it will be time to start figuring out a “Brand” name to start using, and there are some great tools available online to do just that, some free, some with an initial cost, some with a monthly fee. We will start out with the free Google ‘Keyword Planner’, and then in a future chapter we will discuss more on the importance of ‘keywords’ and deciding the value of the services.
